01 / KNOW WHEN TO ACT
When is FireWatch required?
A fire watch may be needed when normal fire-protection measures are impaired, certain activities create an elevated ignition risk, or the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) directs that a fire watch be maintained.
Sprinkler or suppression system
A sprinkler or other suppression system is out of service or cannot provide its intended protection.
Fire alarm outage
The building's fire alarm system is unavailable, partially impaired, or undergoing repair or replacement.
Hot work
Welding, cutting, or grinding activities that may create sparks, heat, or other ignition hazards.
Requirements vary by site. Applicable codes, the nature and duration of the hazard or impairment, and direction from the local AHJ determine what is required. Confirm the requirements for your specific property with the responsible authority.
Repair or replacement work
Work on a fire-protection system creates a period when normal protection is reduced or unavailable.
Construction or renovation
Systems may be incomplete, impaired, or affected by work taking place at the property.
AHJ or Fire Marshal instruction
The responsible authority may require a fire watch based on the property, hazard, impairment, or circumstances.

Logs, records, and status updates so stakeholders understand actions taken and current status.
-
We coordinate follow-up with the appropriate service team for repair, testing, and return to normal protection.
A fire watch is a temporary risk-control measure. It does not replace required repairs, restore an impaired system, or authorize a system to return to service. The system must be properly repaired, tested, and returned to service in accordance with applicable requirements.

05 / Frequently Asked Questions
FireWatch questions, answered
Every site is different. These answers provide general guidance, not a determination of the requirements for a particular property.
-
A fire watch is a designated monitoring activity used to help identify fire hazards and initiate the required response while normal fire-protection measures are impaired or when a fire watch is otherwise required. Duties and coverage depend on the site and applicable requirements.
-
It may be required when a fire alarm, sprinkler, or suppression system is impaired; during certain hot-work activities; or when directed by the local AHJ or Fire Marshal. Requirements depend on the circumstances and applicable codes.
-
Applicable codes and the local AHJ determine requirements for the specific situation. Property teams should confirm coverage, duties, duration, and documentation expectations with the responsible authority.
-
Response timing depends on the site, affected system, urgency, location, and available service resources. Contact Safety Intel with the details so the team can confirm the appropriate next step and availability.
-
Provide the property address, site contact and callback number, affected system or activity, when the issue began or work is scheduled, any known AHJ instructions, and the timeframe in which assistance is needed.
-
Duration depends on the hazard or impairment and applicable requirements. A fire watch should not be discontinued until the responsible parties confirm that the conditions for ending it have been met, including any direction from the AHJ.
-
Documentation depends on the agreed service scope and applicable requirements. Ask Safety Intel to confirm which logs, service records, and status updates will be provided for your situation.
-
No. A fire watch does not repair an impaired system or replace required fire-protection equipment. The affected system must be repaired, tested, and returned to service in accordance with applicable requirements.
